One of the biggest anxieties for South Florida patients is the fear of “starving” during the first week of recovery. While it’s true you can’t hit your favorite steakhouse in your area just yet, your body needs high-quality nutrition to repair tissue and fight infection. Here is how to eat like a king while protecting your surgical sites.

The First 24 Hours: The “Cold & Liquid” Phase

Immediately following your procedure at our Coral Springs clinic, your mouth will be numb and sensitive. Stick to cold, thin liquids. Cold temperatures help constrict blood vessels and reduce initial swelling.

    • Greek Yogurt: High in protein and soothing. Avoid varieties with fruit seeds.
    • Blended Smoothies: Use protein powder, bananas, and milk. Important: Eat these with a spoon, not a straw.
    • Apple Sauce & Pudding: Classic, easy-to-swallow options that require zero jaw movement.
  • Soup: Like gazpacho, which is cold, is a great option.

Days 2 to 5: The “Mushy & Warm” Phase

As the numbness fades, you can move toward more filling, lukewarm options.

  • Mashed Potatoes: A recovery staple. Mix in gravy or butter for extra calories.
  • Hummus: A great savory source of protein. Eat it alone or with very soft, crustless bread.
  • Avocado: The “superfood” of recovery. High in healthy fats that aid in cellular repair.
  • Scrambled Eggs: Soft, easy to chew, and packed with vitamins.

Foods That Are “Off-Limits”

Avoid anything with “sharp” edges like chips, popcorn, or nuts. Also, stay away from spicy foods (no “Florida heat” hot sauce!) and acidic juices like orange or grapefruit juice, as these will sting the open extraction sites. By Day 7, most of our Coral Spings, Margate, and Parkland patients are beginning to reintroduce soft pastas and flaky fish back into their diet.
